Early Victorian Ships Port & Starboard Bench

This style of bench was used on the early ocean liners, made from fine mahogany with sturdy brass brackets and fittings which allow the backrest to fold over to the opposite setting. Once passengers had finished their final course, they would stand and fold the backrest over and sit down again on the other side of the backrest so that they could look out onto the sea through the portholes, smoking and drinking through the rest of their evening. A very rare piece, this one being only our third in over 25 years Covered in an original velvet cloth, the seat is in overall good condition for age, although it does need a little attention to the right-hand side where it is a little saggy and the stuffing underneath that part of the seat requires some tlc
