We offer for consideration, this exceptional and scarce two-wood fusee drop dial timepiece from the early Victorian period, by master clockmaker William Brentnall of Sutton Coldfield, Warwickshire.
Born on 3 July 1814, in Sutton Coldfield, Brentnall served his horological apprenticeship under his father Thomas Brentnall from age 15 to 21, before setting up on his own at High Street, Sutton Coldfield c1837.
He was clearly a very talented craftsman and quickly became noticed and established for his exceptional high-quality workmanship as a clockmaker, producing stunning mantel and wall clocks for his expecting wealthy clients, (such as this exquisite and scarce piece).
As a master clockmaker, Brentnall continued to make clocks into his 51st year until terminal illness struck that sadly claimed his life on 10 February 1866, some 12-months later.
• Beautiful, hand-crafted cabinet work, incorporating a scarce combination of solid light Walnut turned roundhead face over a dark Mahogany drop box, both with excellent patination.
• Case embellishment includes brass stringing intarsia, and a shaped front visible pendulum glazed aperture. The case also retains its original finely hand-carved fan shaped side-ears.
• Hinged inspection door located to the side of the box.
• Hinged regulator door to the bottom of the box.
• Original metal dial with black painted Roman numerals and Brentnall’s details.
• Original pair of blued spade hands secured with a pinned collet.
• Thick glaze mounted in its solid brass bezel.
• Quality 8-day single fusee driven movement with shouldered plates and knopped pillars.
• Comes with its original brass pendulum rod and bob.
During its c185+ years of existence, this magnificent clock has clearly been well-cared for given its impeccable overall condition. It is an outstanding early 19th Century English crafted timepiece!
