Size: Frame 36 cm square. Condition: Excellent condition, remounted in simple gilt late 20th century frame This sampler is a very charming early example of a provincial sampler. Jane Whitaker did not get all of her spelling right and made rather liberal use of commas, but she clearly worked hard on this piece. The verse states that humble souls will have treasures of grace given to them, and when she is dead her friends can have her work. The sampler is dated 1820, since it was made by Jane when she was 11 years old, and she was born 9th June 1809. It was made in Milnthrop (sic), which is Milnthorpe in the Lake District. It is silk on linen, with a traditional strawberry plant border, birds and flowers. Below the verse are two figures one of which represent Hope (with an anchor), the other holds a bird and a branch, and between them is a very small representation of the Temple of Solomon.
Frame 36 cm square.
