Description
We present for consideration, this fabulous fusee wall timepiece with 12” dial, by master clockmaker and jeweller James Farnham of Lyme Regis, Dorset. The clock is in excellent condition and good working order, having been professionally restored and serviced. Born at Bridport, Dorset in 1821, Farnham followed his father and uncles into the clock and watchmaking profession, eventually moving to his own workshop and jewellery premises at 61 Broad Street, Lyme Regis in the mid-1850’s. Farnham’s two sons later joined him in business around 1870, taking over the running of the business in c1885 when their father semi-retirement. (Nb: With this clock comes a copy of a fascinating picture taken in the 1890’s of an aging James Farnham standing in the doorway of his named jewellery outlet and workshop at 61 Broad Street. This high street building still exists today with many of its original features. In 2021, the premises were being used to house to a successful India restaurant...How times have changed!) The clocks finely hand-turned solid Walnut roundhead face over a veneered Walnut boxed cabinet, has good, aged patination. A hinged inspection door is located to one side of the box and an operable lockable door located at the bottom of the box. The clock retains its original metal dial (with the number “3598” stamped on its back), with black Roman numerals and Farnham’s details, finished with its original pair of blued Heavy Double Swell Spade hands, secured with a pinned collet. The clocks dial is then protected by a thick glaze mounted in a solid brass bezel. The clock benefits from a quality 8-day single fusee driven movement set between rectangular plates and turned pillars and comes with its original 72mm diameter brass pendulum bob. This is a fine example of high-quality provincial English fusee timepiece engineering from the mid-Victorian era.
