Description
We present for consideration an exceptional English drop dial fusee wall timepiece from c1838, by Francis Scholefield. Born in Dewsbury c1811, Scholefield served his apprenticeship in neighbouring Bradford, before setting-up on his own at Market Place, Dewsbury, c1833 and died at the young age of 37 in 1846. The clock is in excellent condition and good working order, having been professionally restored and serviced. The well-proportioned and exquisitely eye-catching flame Mahogany cabinet, offers an impressive octogen-shaped head over a radiused finished drop box which incorporates a small visible pendulum glazed aperture. The cabinet’s inventory is beautifully simplistic, retaining its finely hand-carved Acanthus shaped side-ears, and benefiting from three precisely fitted hinged inspection doors; one to each side of the case, the other positioned at the bottom of the drop box with its original and operable brass key locking mechanism. The original hand-painted metal dial is in superb condition for age, with black Roman numerals and the makers legend “Scholefield, Dewsbury.” The dial is then finished with its pair of original blued Stag Beetle style hands secured with a pinned collet and protected by a 2-piece brass bezel that secures a thick glaze mount. The clock benefits from a quality 8-day fusee movement set between shouldered plates separated by knopped pillars and comes with its original brass pendulum rod and bob, together with a brass winding key. A premium timepiece of much substance and character, from one of Yorkshires master clockmakers!
