Fine 19th Century Northern Italian Marquetry Cassapanca or Hall Bench
REF: 2492 / LA82990
A remarkable ornate antique carved fruitwood Northern Italian (Lombardy) marquetry inlaid Cassapanca or Hall Seat / Bench. The raised carved back having a Stemma Nobile or coat of arms flanked by crouching winged dragons (who are Guardians of the Stemma) above a stunning example of marquetry folk art inlaid with fruitwood and bone. The seat and panel below again having a marquetry hunting scene in which the talented craftsman has combined a contrasting array of woods to create these fluid and animated scenes to great effect. The seat lifts up to reveal a very useful storage space hence why they are called a Cassapanca which translates from Italian to “chest-bench”. Flanking the seat are two mythical winged half man half beast figures with female mask below raised on carved mask feet. A stunning example of North Italian cabinet making and marquetry offered in excellent condition with a fine colour and patina having been wax polished using traditional methods.
