Description
A fine half-block model of the America’s Cup yacht Columbia, carved in exotic polished timbers and mounted on an ebonised backboard. The reverse bears an ink inscription and is signed Basil R. Tubbs, with the date stamped 12.8.95. The model is executed to a scale of 1:54 and displays the yacht’s powerful and refined hull form with great clarity.
Designed in 1899 by Nathanael Greene Herreshoff, Columbia was built for the New York Yacht Club and owned by J. P. Morgan. She successfully defended the America’s Cup in 1899, defeating Sir Thomas Lipton’s Shamrock in a decisive 3–0 victory, and went on to defend the Cup again in 1901, becoming the first yacht to win the trophy twice consecutively. Constructed with a steel frame and bronze hull, Columbia was a technological tour de force of her time, incorporating innovations such as an electric winch and exemplifying the peak of Herreshoff’s design genius.
