French inlaid games box in very good condition. The French box makers enjoyed an excellent reputation for producing very fine quality boxes throughout much of the 1800’s and certainly produced some of the best games boxes. This particular example has many features that is typical of many boxes of French origin. Ebonised veneer, intricate piecrust edging, double locking mechanism lock, extent of inlays. All veneer is original, complete and has been spared the wear through that quite frequently mars the appearance of ebonised boxes. Likewise, the piecrust edging has been spared any damage and is as good as you are ever likely to find. The photographs certainly makes the VERY minor defects in the veneer look a great deal worse than it does in person!!! Fine twin inlaid brass strips to the sides, back and front with 5 brass strips of 3 different widths to the top. There has been one (possibly two) very short lengths of replaced brass strips to the top but as can be seen they do not detract to any great degree. Nice finishing touch of the brass strip surrounding the key hole. The box opens to reveal an impressive interior. Original hinges and lock in excellent condition with a working key supplied. Attractive grain to the lid interior with inlaid brass strips to complement the box exterior. The 4 removable trays are all constructed of solid rosewood, all complete with the original divider, all in superb condition. The front middle section is fixed with a removable central divider. The back middle section features the original turned solid rosewood removable dish. All of the interior surfaces beneath the trays are veneered with rosewood, again, all in excellent condition. The box comes complete with over 150 tokens thought to be original and a replacement set of dice and a full deck of playing cards. A nice example of French woodenware and a perfect gift for keen card players. Unpacked weight 2Kg
