Description
A fine quality Victorian paper maché and mother of pearl novelty chess board and backgammon board modelled as a 2 volume book, entitled "Views of the Rhine". The folding top profusely decorated around the border with gilded and painted scrolling decoration with gilded sides. The interior board laid out for backgammon with a pair of gilt tooled leather dice shakers.
A most unusual piece with beautiful mother of pearl inlay.

condition
Generally for the age and use the piece has had it is in good condition but commensurate with the usage there are light scratches and wear to some parts of the ornate gilded and painted decoration. Importantly none of the mother of pearl squares are chipped or cracked and there are no chips to the paper maché. At one end where the hinge is a small crack has appeared at the corner but it is hardly noticeable. There isn't a key for the lock.
