Description
This is a superb 'Queen Anne period' walnut bureau (c.1702-1714). The bureau comes apart into two sections from the heavy moulding above the top long drawer and slots together upon mortice and tenon joints.
There are five drawers, consisting of a two over three configuration with beautiful figured walnut veneered fronts and later Georgian brass hardware.. The ledges with their original spun brass button knobs, pull out to support the open flap, which reveals a fine fitted figured walnut interior, consisting of five drawers, pigeon holes, flanked by silhouette walls. The left drawer in the central bank of three drawers and pigeon holes has a hidden wooden shoot bolt above, which once operated ,allows one to slide the entire central bank out to reveal the hidden string drawers behind.
The bureau has some very minor losses but overall is in fantastic condition for its age and has a superb patina and colour, a must have for the country house.
