Description
France. Antique Infantry NCO Sword Model 1884. Châtellerault, 1900 Excellent antique French infantry NCO sword, model 1884, manufactured at the Manufacture d’Armes de Châtellerault and dated May 1900 according to the inscription visible on the blade. The hilt is made of brass and features a single curved branch guard, robust and effective in protecting the hand, while at the same time providing a clean and balanced silhouette. The pommel, of ovoid form, completes a hilt of harmonious proportions. The grip retains its original metal wire binding or twisted wire wrap, wound regularly and firmly, ensuring a proper grip and adding visual interest to the piece. The oval shell guard displays in relief a flaming grenade, a common military symbol on this type of French regulation weapon and an identifying element of the infantry branch. On the reverse side, the folding element characteristic of the model is preserved, integrated into the hilt and linked to the carrying system, a technical detail that contributes to the sword’s typological authenticity. The blade is straight, made of steel, long and slender, with well defined longitudinal fullers running along much of its surface. Near the base, the manufacturing inscription is preserved, mentioning the Manufacture d’Armes de Châtellerault together with the date of May 1900 and the reference to model 1884. The sword retains its original metal scabbard and is in very good condition, with its suspension ring. It is not easy to find a French regulation NCO sword with original inscription, metal scabbard and, in addition, in excellent condition. This example brings together precisely the qualities that give true value to a fine militaria piece. Authenticity, a complete set, magnificent presence and a state of preservation that allows it to be fully appreciated from the very first moment. This is a serious, elegant sword with real weight within a carefully curated collection. The factory inscription, the harmony of the whole and its excellent condition make it a particularly attractive piece for anyone seeking an original, complete and characterful French sword. Measurements: Total length: 98.5 cm (38.78 in). Blade length: 81 cm (31.89 in).
