Fula people or Fulani (Peul in french) are an ethnic group spread over many countries, predominantly in West Africa, but found also in Central Africa and North Africa. There are lots of suggestions on how these vintage items were worn and the reality is that they are all probably correct. They are heavy items and ideal to be worn as pendants. This piece looks like it was worn as a necklace for a long time rather than a ring, as there is slight indentation/ware on one part of the ring. Worn by both men and women they are used as rings, pendants and hair pieces. Wear often visible on these support the multiple use. They are often given as a sign of a strong friendship between women and are highly valued in the tribe being used typically for special occasions and ceremonies. They are not hallmarked but are silver of an unknown purity as they were frequently made from silver coinage in the early to mid 20th Century although the traditional designs are very hard to date and can be older. They polish to high silver bright shine or can be left to develop a beautiful patina. Usually made by the lost wax or sand cast technique, these rings are usually cast plain and forged and detailed post casting. Traditional, highly valued and associated with good luck, prosperity and friendship.
The Crystal Ball Antiques has clarified that the Fulani or Peul French Tribal Ring Pendant From Malawi (LA78922) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being 1950s
Slight crazing on the inside of the ring, but I think this is original from the casting of the piece.
