Description
Galloping Horse — Bronze Sculpture by Enzo Plazzotta (1921–1981), Edition 6 of 9
Mid-20th Century British Bronze | Equestrian Sculpture | Limited Edition
Description
A powerful and highly collectible bronze sculpture titled Galloping Horse by Enzo Plazzotta. This limited edition cast (6/9) captures the dynamic suspension phase of a gallop, where all four hooves lift from the ground, conveying speed, strength, and controlled energy.
The elongated leaning form and forward-driving posture create a strong sense of movement, with the horse appearing almost airborne. This is not only an anatomical study but a sculptural expression of motion and vitality. The piece is mounted on an oval bronze base with a slim black slate plinth.
The Artist
Enzo Plazzotta was an Italian-born sculptor who established his career in Britain and became a leading figure in 20th-century British sculpture.
Trained at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice, he moved to London after the Second World War and gained recognition for his animal sculptures and major public commissions. His work is held in important collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum and the National Portrait Gallery.
Form & Composition
This sculpture demonstrates Plazzotta’s mastery of movement and balance:
Extended forelegs project forward, emphasising motion
Hindquarters compress, suggesting stored energy
Lowered head conveys focus and direction
Balanced composition creates tension between movement and stability
The textured bronze surface enhances light and shadow, reinforcing the sense of motion while the base anchors the composition.
