Description
A genuine George II period mahogany oval drop-leaf gateleg table dating from the mid-18th century, circa 1750. Constructed in well-figured solid Cuban mahogany, the oval top is formed with two hinged leaves, each supported by a single gateleg action, allowing the table to be used either fully opened or compactly folded away. The plain frieze is raised on elegant tapering turned legs, terminating in offset pad feet — a classic and immediately recognisable detail of the period. The proportions are particularly pleasing, giving the table a light, well-balanced stance typical of good Georgian work.
Compact, practical, and highly versatile, this table works equally well as a small dining table, an occasional or breakfast table, or as a side table when the leaves are down. Its restrained Georgian design, early timber, and honest country character make it an easy piece to place in both traditional and more relaxed modern interiors.
measurements
Height: 73.25 cm (28 3/4 in), Width (leaves up): 129.5 cm (51 in), Width (leaves down): 47.5 cm (18 3/4 in), Depth: 106 cm (42 in)
declaration
Leeds Antiques has clarified that the George II Mid 18th Century Mahogany Oval Drop-leaf Gateleg Table c.1750 (LA561590) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being c.1750
condition
In good, honest condition, fully commensurate with age. The table is structurally sound and sturdy, with no loose joints. There is a split to the top with an old, robust metal bracket repair to the hidden underside, and a small chip to the corner of one end leaf over the rule joint, neatly repaired and well polished over. These are long-established, practical repairs and do not detract from either the function or appearance of the piece.
Aside from these minor running repairs, the table remains entirely original, retaining its early timbers and original hinges. The surface displays a warm, even colour and a pleasing aged patina, appearing to retain its original finish, maintained with wax rather than later polish. The table has been sensitively cleaned and waxed in our workshop, with restoration kept to an absolute minimum to preserve authenticity.
As with all antique furniture, small signs of age and use are present and should be expected; they contribute to the charm and character of this genuine mid-18th-century Georgian table.
