Description
George III Mahogany Bow-Front Hanging Corner Cupboard with Spice Drawers, c.1760–1780
A very good George III mahogany bow-front hanging corner cupboard, dating from the third quarter of the 18th century, circa 1760–1780. The cupboard has a handsome bowed front with well-figured mahogany doors, a moulded cornice and base, and attractive original pierced brass escutcheons. The doors open to reveal a painted interior with shaped corner shelves and two small lower spice drawers, a particularly appealing and useful feature.
The cupboard has a lovely rich colour and a pleasingly honest Georgian surface, with the age, minor marks and signs of use one would expect from a piece of this period. The bow front gives it a much more elegant presence than a standard flat-fronted corner cupboard, while the small internal drawers add both character and practicality. It is a good quality example, ideal for use in a kitchen, dining room, hallway or period interior.
measurements
Width across front: 74 cm (29 1/8 inches), Height: 105.5 cm (41 1/2 inches), Depth from hidden rear corner to outer side corner: 50 cm (19 3/4 inches), Projection from hidden rear corner to front of bow: 45.25 cm (17 13/16 inches)
declaration
Leeds Antiques has clarified that the George III Mahogany Bow-front Hanging Corner Cupboard with Spice Drawers (LA577384) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being Circa 1760 to 1780
condition
In good antique condition, restored sympathetically and to a very high standard. The cupboard is structurally sound and presents very well. The original hinges and brass escutcheons remain in place. The lock appears period, though it may be an old replacement. The interior has been painted at some time, as is often the case with cupboards of this type, and shows age, wear, marks and some losses to the painted shelf edges. The original back and boards are present. There are various old marks, knocks, surface scratches and signs of use throughout, all consistent with age and adding to the piece’s honest character and patina.
