George Smith Deep-Buttoned Chesterfield Sofa - After the Original at March House – 20th Century A particularly impressive and generously proportioned George Smith Chesterfield sofa, made after the celebrated original at March House and upholstered in a wonderfully rich gold strié velvet. It is of substantial country-house scale, the sofa measures an impressive 250 cm wide and has the wonderfully low, deep proportions characteristic of this design. The continuous rolled back and arms are deeply buttoned, flowing into the generously upholstered deep-buttoned seat, creating the enveloping form for which the classic Chesterfield is so admired. The gold strié velvet is especially successful on this piece. Its softly varied surface gives the upholstery depth and movement, ranging from warm ochre and old gold to lighter tones as the pile catches the light. It has an attractive, gently lived-in appearance that suits the relaxed grandeur of the sofa particularly well. The upholstered front rail is complemented by dark turned timber feet, including the central support visible beneath the considerable span of the sofa.
