George V Royal Cypher Painted Fire Sand Bucket

A highly decorative and unusual George V period fire sand bucket, dating from the first third of the 20th century. Of traditional riveted sheet-metal construction, the bucket retains its original substantial swing handle and is painted in a deep red finish with contrasting pale interior. The front is boldly inscribed “SAND” and decorated with an impressive gilt crowned GR V Royal cypher, representing King George V, who reigned from 1910 until 1936. Buckets of this type formed part of early fire-fighting equipment and were kept filled with sand for dealing with fires, particularly where the use of water would have been unsuitable. The presence of the Royal cypher suggests that this example was originally intended for use within a Crown or government establishment. A particularly appealing piece of early 20th-century functional equipment which now makes an excellent decorative object. The combination of the original red painted surface, bold black lettering and gilt Royal cypher gives it considerable visual impact.
