An impeccable and important antique Georgian mourning locket. The beauty and craftsmanship of this piece are second to none and can only be found in such prestigious Georgian pieces. The locket has glazed on both sides in a rich 9ct gold frame with warm rosey tones, it has a large section of delicately woven brown hair decorated with a seed pearl overlay spelling the initials JR. Surrounding the hair work there is a fine black and white enamelled band, this reads; James Richards Esq OB 19 Jan 1795 AET 40. The reverse of the locket has a stunning blue enameled foiled glass panel with striking patterns when turned in the light, the center is decorated with a lock of hair shaped secured with a seed pearl ribbon, this has a rich yellow gold and blue enamel border, framing the hair work beautifully. Provenance: From the wide-ranging and prestigious estate of James Richards Esq of Sulham house Berkshire 1755-1795, James Richards was a British nobleman of good standing and a wealthy landowner with strong links to the Berkshire area. Sulham house his main estate was built in 1701 and was one of the many properties that he left in his will. There are records available in the National Archives detailing elements of James Richards' life including his marriage, death, and estates. English make, late 18th century, the 1970s, tests as 9ct gold. Approx measurements: 2.25" width 3.10" length including the bale top.
