Description
Georgian silver vinaigrette with a beautifully gilded and pierced grille. It is fully hallmarked for Birmingham 1832 and with the makers mark ‘J.W’ for Joseph Willmore. The top cartouche is blank and surrounded by an engine-turned geometric pattern repeated to the underside. There is a detailed floral scroll relief to the opening. Date & Origin:- Bread Street, Birmingham, England, 1832. Period of William IV. Documented Examples:- MET museum: https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/207449 PH Museum https://collection.powerhouse.com.au/object/319389 Historical Context:- Joseph Willmore of Willmore & Co was a silversmith located in Bread Street, Birmingham, who produced a variety of items including boxes, buckles, decanter labels, flatware, fruit knives, inkstands, nutmeg graters, spectacles, trays and vinaigrettes. He registered this mark in 1797 and used it until 1844. From Aug 1834 this mark was used by the partnership of Joseph Willmore, John Yapp & John Woodward. Yapp & Woodward then registered their "Y&W" mark in May 1845.
