Interesting Pair of William IV Card Tables, Attributed to Gillows c.1835

An Interesting Pair of William IV Card Tables, Attributed to Gillows c.1835 The tables with d-shaped rounded rectangular tops with beaded mouldings running around both parts of the folding tops and around the apron on the frieze. The rest of the frieze makes use of panelled mouldings for extra decorative impact on top of the fine rosewood veneers. Beneath the tops are tapering octagonal columns which lead to a quadripartite base via a series of ornate mouldings incorporating some very large-scale and bold gadrooning. The legs themselves have incurved knurled or scroll feet with leaf carving on the knees. The octagonal columns on these tables relates to a design for a card table in Thomas King’s Cabinet Maker’s Sketch Book of 1835 but the more ornate base suggests that these tables are of slightly later date. Patterns published by the makers William Smee and Sons in 1850 are closer in feel so a date between these two publications is likely. The maker of these tables is certainly the firm of Gillows.
