Description
Offered for sale is a gorgeous, pedestal footed English pottery chinoiserie Imari pattern fruit bowl. It is richly decorated in typical ironstone colour palate of vibrant shades of burnt orange, cobalt blue and bright green with an abundance of thick, rich gilding in a floral theme with a pagoda. The outer body of the bowl is embossed.
It is a truly stunning piece that would look fabulous in any table setting.
It is very similar to a 19th -20th century Minton pattern called "Amherst Japan." The pattern was named after Lord William Pitt Amherst 1773-1857, who was the 1st Earl Amherst, a British politician and the Governor General of India from 1823-1828.
This example is backstamped "Made in England" with " Amherst" "Ironstone" and "1423" in red overglaze on bottom. The fact that it states "Made in England" dates it no earlier than 1921.
