A London, ebonised bracket/table clock of good proportions. The case front has gilded brass edging to the dial and standing on gilded ogee feet. Brass fretwork to the case sides with silk backing. Gilded brass edging to the case sides. An arched painted dial signed 'J H Borrell 15 Wilderness Row, London' with a strike/silent to the arch. Lovely engraved hands. A fine quality, twin fusee mechanism striking the 1/2 hours and hours on a bell. A beautifully engraved backplate to the mechanism signed 'J H Borrell, London' within a cartouche. A glass back door showing the mechanism. Circa 1835.
The Borrell family of clockmakers worked in London in the 18th and 19th centuries. J.H. Borrell is recorded in Loomes 'Watchmakers and Clockmakers of The World' book as working in 1839. This has rear winding which is unusual.
