John Spinney Blandford Forum Longcase Grandfather Clock
A small 'cottage' Georgian Dorset longcase clock. A flat top pediment to the oak case of neat, slim proportions. Gilded wooden front column capitals. A slim trunk door with the original brass escutcheon. A small 10" brass and silvered dial with corner brass cast spandrels. A nicely engraved dial centre with the makers name to the silvered chapter ring and original single hand dial layout. A well constructed 'birdcage' 30 hour mechanism striking the hours on a bell. The maker has utilised a lantern clock plate for the clock frame base. An old case label on the back board showing makers details. John Spinney of Blandford (Forum) is recorded in 'Dorset Clocks and Clockmakers' book from 1707 to 1780. It is noted in the book that he made 30 hour single hand clocks, bracket and turret clocks.
