Large 19th Century Measham “A Present from a Friend” Bargeware Teapot
A wonderfully characterful late‑Victorian Measham bargeware teapot, richly glazed in treacle‑brown with colourful applied sprigs and the motto:
“A PRESENT FROM A FRIEND”
Made around **1880–1895** for sale through the canal‑side shops at Measham, these generous teapots were treasured presentation pieces for boating families and proud additions to cottage mantelpieces. This is an impressively large example at approx. 31 cm high, with:
Bold relief birds and floral sprigs picked out in blue, green and crimson enamels. Beaded bands encircling the shoulder and body. A high domed lid topped with a charming miniature teapot finial. Today it makes a striking decorative statement for a kitchen dresser, canal boat, country cottage or period interior.
Time has left its mark and this piece is priced accordingly:
Significant chipping and losses to the rim of the body, with exposed earthenware and traces of old adhesive around the upper section. General glaze wear, surface scratches and age‑related crazing throughout. Small glaze flakes and minor losses to some of the applied flowers. The lid is in good structural order with typical wear to high points
Condition: This is an antique item with signs of its age and history. The main body, handle, and spout are in good display condition with vibrant colours on the sprigging. Please Note: There is significant chipping/loss to the inner gallery rim (where the lid sits), as shown in the detailed photos. When the lid is in place, the damage is partially obscured, but it is present. There is expected age-related crazing to the glaze. Priced accordingly for this condition.
