Description
This is a large antique silver chest. An English, oak and cast iron bound shipping trunk, dating to the early Victorian period, circa 1850. An exceptional, substantial piece of Victorian craftsmanship with distinguished provenance. Superb Victorian shipping chest of impressive proportion and quality. Displays a pleasingly aged patina consistent with its long service. Select oak stocks present fine grain interest and deep caramel hues. Profusely bound with cast iron straps, providing excellent strength and rigidity. Trio of inset locks to the fascia — left-hand lock in working order, key present. Gently domed lid opens wide, resting securely against a rear brace. Interior fitted with two removable storage boxes, each with inset carry handles. Top edge dressed with a maker’s plaque for E & E Emanuel, Silversmiths of Portsmouth. Engraved brass plaque to the fascia bearing the name Bridges Taylor. Fascia also displays the abbreviation R.E., denoting the Royal Engineers of the British Army. Pairs of robust drop handles to each side aid lifting and carriage. Ideal for use as a distinguished coffee table within a fine period interior. This is a magnificent oak and cast iron shipping trunk, offering outstanding character, provenance and decorative presence for the collector, study or refined interior.
