Description
A fine North Italian parcel gilt and painted wood console table, Turin, late 18th Century, Polychrome-decorated, the rectangular Breccia di Serravezza marble top above an acanthus-carved frieze with central medallion, on fluted tapered legs.
This table is conceived in the neoclassical style dominant in the last quarter of the 18th Century. With its elegant oval figural panel carved with a reclining classical male figure, delicately carved acanthus leaf and flowerhead frieze and restrained square tapered legs it epitomizes the neoclassical style at its height.
The Fine quality of the carving to the frieze in particular is reminiscent of the work of the Turin sculptor, cabinet maker and carver Giuseppe Maria Bonzanigo (1745 – 1820), one of the greatest Italian 18th century cabinet makers and carvers. His work is still highly regarded today.
