Late 1950s Elco 9 Carat Gold Wrist Watch

The watch has a Helvetia 28-jewel automatic movement, calibre 841, which is working well. As with many Helvetia movements, it is wound anti-clockwise. Helvetia was a trade mark name used by the General Watch Company (founded by Louis Brandt - founder of Omega). Helvetia wristwatches and pocket watches were imported to the UK in the 1950s by Elco Clocks and Watches which explains why the dial is signed Elco and yet the movement is signed Helvetia. The watch measures 34mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the lugs so it is a decent size. The case is 9 carat gold and there are hallmarks inside the case back for London 1956 with a maker’s mark ECW for Elco Clocks and Watches. The case is nice and heavy and it is in good condition too. The back has a personal inscription dated 1959. The lens is in good condition. The signed dial has some age related discolouration and the hands appear to be replacements although of the correct style for the watch. A new black leather strap has been fitted. All of our watches are checked over before listing and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch. All of our prices include worldwide postage. Credit / debit card purchases can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the red Buy Now button on each listing page. We are VAT registered and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations. We also welcome film / TV enquiries (we have supplied Peaky Blinders, Grantchester and Kenneth Branagh's Murder on the Orient Express to name just a few). Non-UK buyers are welcome but payment can be made by Paypal only. Please note that we are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers.
