Description
Late-19th-Century Milanese Bronze Plaque with Sforza–Visconti Heraldry by Porta Ravizza
A refined Milanese bronze plaque cast by Porta Ravizza & Co. around 1891, created during the major restoration of Castello Sforzesco. Executed in a pronounced 4 cm high relief, the work integrates precise architectural depiction of the castle with an elaborate Renaissance Revival heraldic programme. The piece is presented in its original period tiger-oak frame.
Motto and Dates in Relief:
POST FATA RESURGO — “After death, I rise again”
1863 — Transfer of Castello Sforzesco to the Municipality of Milan
1894 — Key phase of the late-19th-century restoration campaign
Dimensions
Framed: 36.5 × 27 cm
Relief depth: 4 cm
Frame: Period tiger oak, structurally sound, newly wired for display
Heraldic Programme: Sforza–Visconti Arms
The plaque presents the unified ducal arms of Milan:
Visconti Biscione (1st & 4th quarters): The historic symbol of the Visconti dynasty.
Sforza Beast (2nd & 3rd quarters): A lion–griffin hybrid denoting Sforza military authority and ducal sovereignty.
This heraldic structure commemorates the union of Francesco Sforza and Bianca Maria Visconti and the political consolidation of 15th-century Milan.
Medallic Portraits
Two quattrocento-style portrait medallions appear in the lower right:
Francesco I Sforza — Founder of the revitalised ducal state.
Galeazzo Maria Sforza — Renaissance patron associated with the cultural life of the castle.
Historical and Artistic Context
Castello Sforzesco served successive ruling dynasties including the Visconti, Sforza, French Valois, Spanish Habsburgs, Austrian administrators, and the Napoleonic government. The bronze synthesises this lineage through its heraldry, motto, and architectural composition, aligning with the fin-de-siècle revival of Milan’s quattrocento identity.
The artistic programme includes:
Radiating sunburst motif symbolising civic rebirth
Renaissance Revival trophies and decorative elements
Accurate architectural rendering of Castello Sforzesco
Foundry signature PORTA RAVIZZA & CO.
