Description
For sale here is this superb, large, antique, bell-striking mantel clock, with painted, blue-ground face and sides. This fine French solid brass clock is architectural in shape, with four columns topped with finials and a finial on top. The clock face is all painted porcelain; the centre of the blue ground dial is painted with a coastal landscape, with a large coastal scene with boats and ships beneath. The face and dial are further embellished with white and turquoise jewelling and gilding.
The large porcelain side panels are similarly decorated with port and coastal scenes and white jewelled borders. The side panels are signed "L.B". The clock dates to c1870.
This clock came with a dated inscribed plaque with the following wording: "Presented to J.S.Phillips Esq're, for Seven Years Father of The Cooks Company, as a mark of the esteem and respect in which he is held by every Member of the Court & also of their appreciation of the services he has rendered the Company. Guildhall, London, 11th September 1870. T.H,Staples. Master."
I have photographed the clock with and without the inscribed plaque, as it is easily removed or replaced, if desired.
The 8-day clock movement strikes on the hours and the half hours. It is stamped to the back with "R & G, PARIS & LONDON" and with the serial number "972". The clock has been checked and oiled and is working well. It will come complete with pendulum, bell and key.

condition
Unless stated otherwise, all clocks are working when listed. Antique and vintage mantel clocks may require to be set up and put into beat again after transit. Firstly, the clock must be on a level surface to run properly. Sometimes, slight adjustments need to be made after transit, to get the clock running properly in its new position. I am happy to advise you on how to do this, either by email or phone. I can help you with making any adjustments required, but I am not responsible for this. Alternatively, if you are unsure about adjusting the clock yourself you can enlist expert help, at your expense. Antique and vintage clocks are delicate instruments and no guarantees are given regarding performance after transit, however problems are rare and we will always try to help. Please be aware that antique clocks generally don't keep perfect time. Thank you.
