Welcome to chapmanpugh modern antiques. We sell antiques from the 17th to the 21st centuries that look good in modern and contemporary settings. We are particularly interested in pieces created by influential designers, manufacturers and furniture makers. We choose examples which we think are stylish and are interested in their place in history. We especially like antiques with a story attached. We also love the fact that by buying an antique piece of furniture, pottery, glass etc to use again, we are preserving our natural resources and preventing the environmental burden of another item being produced. This is why antiques are so wonderfully sustainable. New items are added on a regular basis. FREE DELIVERY IN UK (except furniture) Global Shipping

Description
PRE CHRISTMAS SALE - 25% OFF In General A stunning, superb quality, rare, Arts and Crafts, mahogany Ladderback Rocking Chair by the renowned designer and furniture maker William Birch of High Wycombe and retailed through the famous Luxury London Department Store - Liberty & Co circa 1900. A brand new unused cushion by William Morris At Home showcasing one of his best known designs, the Strawberry Thief, has been added to the chair seat base as a seat cushion. William Morris based the pattern and the name on the thrushes which frequently stole strawberries in the kitchen garden of his countryside home, Kelmscott Manor in Oxfordshire. This fabric was originally made in 1883 -1919 which coincides with the age of this rocking chair - also William Morris and William Birch were contemporaries both working within the context of the Arts and Crafts movement. Comprising wonderful ornate turned arm supports and stunning arm balustrades, influenced by the Art Nouveau and Aesthetic movements, the high back with very pretty acorn shaped finials and pronounced arm joints are also influenced by the stunning Shaker Rocking Chairs of the 19th Century. The high Ladderback are of the British Arts and Crafts style of rocking chairs and chairs of the time. This rocking chair has very attractive turned front legs and twin side stretchers. This Rocking Chair has small proportions so will comfortably fit into smaller interiors. Its modern Arts and Crafts design will work well in contemporary as well as period spaces. This rocking chair is an unusual and fun piece of furniture whilst also representing a wonderful piece of Arts and Crafts design history!
