L.N.E.R Fusee Dial Railway Wall Clock, Fenchurch St

This example is a rare Great Eastern Railway and London & North Eastern Railway 24-Hour Fusee Clock dating from circa 1870 A fine and rare English railway clock, originally supplied to the Great Eastern Railway, subsequently repainted for the London & North Eastern Railway, and retaining its original ivorine number plate, numbered 1081. The clock is fitted with a substantial eight-day chain-driven fusee movement, with rectangular plates secured by turned pillars and an anchor escapement. The rear plate is stamped ‘GER’, providing an important indication of its original railway ownership. The movement has been fully dismantled, cleaned and restored and as such benefits from my three year guarantee. The 12-inch dial was repainted after the 1923 railway grouping by the LNER clock workshops at Doncaster and bears the later ‘LNER’ designation. The original ivorine number plate 1081 is mounted below the winding aperture, and the clock retains its original spade hands. The movement and dial are housed within a handsome mahogany case, the circular front framed by a one-piece turned surround and fitted with a substantial cast-brass bezel incorporating a polished sight ring. The case retains its side door and lower access door. Of particular historical interest is the clock’s documented railway provenance. The LNER clock records identify No. 1081 as having been located in the Inspectors’ Office at Fenchurch Street Station. This location is additionally inscribed on the reverse of the dial. The clock is accompanied by its pendulum and winding key and has undergone comprehensive ethical restoration. An unusually well-preserved survivor of the nineteenth-century railway clock tradition, No. 1081 is notable for the survival of its early GER movement and case, its subsequent LNER identity, and its recorded association with one of London’s principal railway termini.
