Description
A wedge-shaped bronze axe head with a cylindrical socket. The socket has a collared base and an upper face of stylized zoomorphic form, possibly representing a moufflon (a regularly used symbol in Luristan art), with jutting muzzle and horns above (represented by a single scroll). The blade is long, with a slightly convex blunt edge. Luristan: Circa 12th-8th century Bc. Condition: Complete and intact; with accretions and patches of ancient corrosion which is stable and not powdery. Length 14 cms (5.5 ins). Provenance: Acquired 1980-2015. Ex Abelita family collection. (Throughout the Ancient World, from Greece to Persia, battles raged. The skilled Ancient Persian craftsmen developed great skill in bronze working, producing some of the finest weaponry then available).
