Description
A fine English spring-driven striking table clock in a mahogany case signed on the dial “Benjamin Maud London”. The bell top case is of classical shape for the period, with arched doors to the front and rear, and pierced mahogany sound frets to the corners with brass silk-lined fish-scale frets to both sides. The case is embellished with pineapple finials on the four corners and is surmounted by a brass carrying handle, while the clock rests on block feet. The corners of the arched dial are embellished by rococo spandrels around a silvered brass Roman and Arabic chapter ring, with an engraved centre signed “Benjamin Maud London”, date aperture and false pendulum. In the arch, there is a strike/silent subsidiary dial. The eight-day movement is driven by two spring barrels via fusees. It consists of going work with original verge escapement, rack hour striking on a bell. The last hour struck can be repeated at will by pulling a cord to the side of the clock. The back plate of the clock is beautifully engraved with matching brackets. *Pictures taken prior to restoration. Serviced and guaranteed for 3 years. Provenance: Private collection – U.K.
