Martin Brothers Style Bronze Grotesque Wally Bird Sculpture 20th-Century This is a fabulous and highly characterful cast bronze sculpture depicting a grotesque Wally Bird, modelled very much in the celebrated style of the Martin Brothers. Standing an impressive 25.9 cm tall, the bird has been wonderfully conceived with an exaggerated oversized beak, wonderfully sleepy half-closed eyes and a delightfully solemn, almost disapproving expression. The body is extensively modelled with individually worked feathers, folded wings and powerful legs terminating in wonderfully oversized clawed feet, all standing upon the integral shaped bronze base. Of particular appeal is the contrast between the richly textured plumage and the smoother, naturally highlighted surface of the substantial beak. The bronze displays a lovely deep brown patination throughout, with attractive lighter highlights to the raised areas. Viewed from different angles, the sculpture takes on an entirely different personality, and the side profile is particularly striking. The wonderfully eccentric character is unmistakably reminiscent of the famous Martin Brothers grotesque bird sculptures, popularly known as “Wally Birds”, which were produced in a remarkable variety of individual personalities and expressions. Although inspired by these iconic creations, this example is cast in bronze rather than the salt-glazed stoneware traditionally associated with the Martin Brothers, making it a particularly decorative interpretation of the celebrated design. A superb conversation piece and a wonderfully quirky addition to either a traditional or contemporary interior. Condition The sculpture is offered in very good overall condition, with age-related surface wear and patination consistent with its character.
