Description
A fine and elegant mid 18th century mahogany centre writing table of unusual and practical design, dating to around 1750. Crafted from beautifully figured mahogany, the table displays a rich warm colour and excellent patina that has developed over time, highlighting the quality of the timber and its craftsmanship. The rectangular top sits above a single long drawer to the front, fitted with attractive brass handles and retaining its original key. The drawer is well constructed with traditional dovetail joints, reflecting the quality cabinetmaking of the Georgian period. A particularly appealing feature of this table is the pair of pull-out slides concealed beneath the top on either side. These slides reveal fitted compartments designed to hold inkwells and writing accessories, providing additional practical surface space when in use. Such thoughtful details make the table both functional and highly decorative. The table stands on elegant chamfered legs with ogee shaped brackets to the corners, terminating in the original brass castors. The refined proportions allow the piece to sit comfortably in the centre of a room, as originally intended. Both practical and decorative, this charming Georgian writing table would make a wonderful desk, occasional table or centrepiece in a traditional or contemporary interior.
