Description
Superb quality sterling silver and enamelled Mull Highland Games Medal, made by the well known company Thomas Fattorini and awarded in 1934, larger than normal size at 1 .25 inch. Decorated in the Celtic Revival style which originated in the late 19th C. spread throughout Europe and epitomised on Iona in the late 19th and early 20th C. Circular, with, to the front, a Clan galley, in red enamel on a deep blue sea, with a pale blue sky and a thin green outer rim with wavey continuous line and dot decoration, the clouds in the sky, the waves and the lines to the hull of the Galley and masts are defined with thin silver lines. In the deep blue sea between the wave lines is "ceartas" defined within thin silver lines, overall an incredible example of enamelling. The Clan Galley is in the form of the MacLean of Duart Galley and "ceartas" can mean "justice". To the reverse is cast around the rim is "Mull Highland Games" with a thistle head and leaves completing the circle, underneath the rim and central to the top is" Tobermory", to the bottom, makers mark T.F. for Thomas Fattorini and stamped sterling silver. To the centre is engraved "The MacLean Cup -- Ceol Mor(Local) -- 1934". All is good. Post Paid Worldwide
