Description
This is a good 18th century 8 day longcase clock by J Whitworth of Lussley in nice original condition dating from around 1780. The clock has a caddied pediment with a crossbanded trunk door flanked on the case by brass capped oak pilasters. The 13 and a quarter inch brass dial has a Roman and Arabic slivered chapter ring with the dial centre engraved with a bird, sailing boat and scroll decoration. There is a moon dial aperture with delightful hand painted moon face and rural scenes rotating. This has a working four pillar movement with anchor escapement and rack and strikes a lovely tone on a bell on the hour every hour. The clock has attractive proportions and a good colour and patina to the oak. The classical hand painted teal blue and gilded frieze around the caddy pediment is a very nice unusual detail, with a central urn, swags scrolls and birds featured.
