Oak Glastonbury Chair c.1880

This is a late 19th century (c.1880) oak Glastonbury chair. This style of chair originated from a description brought from Rome in 1504 by Abbot Richard Beere to Glastonbury Abbey. This style was much copied by the Victorians who took inspiration from medieval and early designs. The chair is constructed in solid oak throughout, having simple worked mouldings to the legs and rails. The chair is made to be dismantled and re-assembled for ease of transportation by simply removing the wedges on each joint (these joints are referred to as tusk tenons).
