Description
Late 17th Century / Early 18th Century English Oak Joint Stool, c.1680–1720
A charming early English oak joint stool, dating from the late 17th to early 18th century, circa 1680–1720. Of pleasing and highly usable proportions, the stool has a thick rectangular plank top above a traditionally jointed base, with turned supports, block feet and broad low stretchers. The oak has excellent colour and patina, with a good original surface and the dry, mellow character one hopes to find in early country furniture.
The stool has a strong, honest vernacular presence, with lovely natural wear from long use. The broad lower stretchers are particularly attractive, showing softening and wear consistent with age, while the turned legs and block feet give the piece a pleasingly grounded appearance. As well as serving as a traditional stool, it would work very well today as a small side table, wine table, lamp stand, bedside piece or fireside accent.
