Original Painted 1920s Childrens Wooden Cot, Display Cot For Dolls & Bears

This is a great survivor from the early 20th century that possibly could even be pressed into service today, although modern ideas in childcare probably dictate today’s products should be used. This is a totally original child’s cot from the 1920s and really does capture the style of the period. The overall shape of the design, the use of the two delicate shades of greeny-blue, and best of all, the two oval pictures of children dressed in Pierrot outfits, on the head and foot board, so identifiable with the 1920s. I have even seen a similarly shaped cot in an illustration of the time! Constructed from a solid pine framework, inset with plywood panels, it is designed to disassemble; the sides have special lugs that slot together to engage firmly with the head and foot boards. The sides also have on their lower edge brackets to support a mattress (see detail of picture #6 showing locating lugs), but this has disappeared long ago and for hygiene reasons, just as well. The brackets could be used to locate a board onto which a modern mattress can sit. With no breaks, splits, repairs or bits missing, it's nice to see a household item that has come through the Great Depression and World War Ii (plus maybe many moves of household!) virtually unscathed. Even though the paint has flaked off in a few places, the undeniable fact is that this is a great piece of social history, and one that warrants preserving. It would make a great piece for displaying a collection of dolls or bears, equally it would look good when used for shop displays.
