This is an exceptional pair of wooden marblised pedestals. They date to the early years of the 19th Century, the popular era of 'The Grand Tour', and interest in the antiquities of Greece and Rome. They would have been built for displaying urns, plants, statues, or sculpture. They have been skillfully built using segments of wood to form hollow columns. These were then shaped and carved into reeded pillars, and the surface developed with gesso before being beautifully painted to simulate aged yellow Sierra marble.
Middleton's Antiques has clarified that the Pair of 19th Century Simulated Marble Plinths. Reeded Pedestal Columns (LA352119) is genuinely of the period declared with the date/period of manufacture being Early 19th Century
They remain in excellent antique condition and sturdy for use.
