Offered for sale is a pair of Clarice Cliff "Rhodanthe" pattern dinner plates. They are beautifully decorated in the 'Rhodanthe' pattern so evocative of the Art Deco period glazed in cream with a central floral pattern of marigolds in shades of orange yellow and brown. The sinuous stems of the stylised marigold flowers work well . A classic Art Deco Clarice Cliff design, they were made during the 1930's and early 1940's, during which time, both Newport pottery and A.J Wilkinson were producing the wares of Clarice Cliff. The factory stamps on both plates read "Clarice Cliff" "Newport Pottery Co, England" and also "Royal Staffordshire Pottery, A.J Wilkinson Ltd" "Honeyglaze". The first plate is impressed with a diamond shape and the numbers 8 & 37, the second with 3 & 40. I would surmise from this that they were produced in August 1937 & March 1940 respectively. Clarice Cliff was an English ceramic artist active from 1922 to 1963. Clarice Cliff was born on January 20th 1899 in Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent and started work at the age of 13 in 'The Potteries'. She moved to the AJ Wilkinson's pottery factory in 1916. Eventually Clarice was given her own studio and the famous 'Bizarre' wares were launched in 1927. Clarice married her then boss, Colley Shorter, in 1940 and moves with Colley to Chetwynd House, with its stunning gardens. The factory continues to produce pottery bearing Clarice's name until 1964. Following Colley Shorter's death Clarice sells the factory to Midwinter's and retires to Chetwynd House. The first Clarice Cliff exhibition took place at Brighton in 1972 and Clarice provided comments for the catalogue. Clarice Cliff died suddenly at Chetwynd House on 23rd October 1972. 1999 was celebrated Worldwide as Clarice's Centenary year.
