Description
Eye-catching, mirrored pair of Doulton Lambeth stoneware vases from the Aesthetic Movement period by Edith Lupton, dated 1886. Footed ovoid body with gently waisted neck and flared rim. Lovely design of trailing morning glory in flower over a delicately decorated ground. The incised design also in relief to accentuate the flowers. Designs mirrored across the pair of vases. Geometric bands to foot and rim – alluding to the Aesthetic Movement period. Impressed Doulton Lambeth mark and number 771 to bases. Monogrammed Edl (for artist Edith Lupton) and assistants Ma (for Mary Aitken), H (for Alice Herapath), and mð (unknown). The vases measure 30.5 cm in height and 20 cm maximum diameter. Edith Lupton worked at Doulton as an artist between c1875 and c1890. She is believed to have retired about c1890 but unusually, is thought to have continued to do freelance work up until her death in 1896. Initially known for her incised foliate designs, she later branched out to include delicate pâte-sur- pâte painting as well as perforated and carved decoration. Mary Aitken work as an assistant from 1875 to 1894. Alice M Herapath started working at Doulton as an assistant together with her sister, Edith in 1882.
