This panel is made up of four delightful Delft tiles on plaster base, with two hanging hooks incorporated. The tiles date from the mid 18th century and are made of earthenware, coated with white slip, painted in cobalt blue and glazed. The landscapes fit together nicely, being effectively two pairs, though with differences in detail: one pair shows houses in a landscape with a ship's sail in the background, the other a workman returning home, with a house church and ship on one and a church and ship on the other. The painting shows the typical naive charm of these tiles, which were used often for fireplace decoration and other panelling. There is a label on the back for Guest & Gray, Antique dealers in Kensington Church Street, London.
Each tile 13 cm square, appx 6 mm thick, the plaster base is approx 10mm thick.
