Description
A fine lacquered brass pocket barometer altimeter and compass compendium by Chadburn & Son, Liverpool, c1870. Pocket barometer compendium having engraved and silvered dial, the upper portion marked "Rain," "Change" and "Fair." The lower portion signed by the maker "Chadburn & Son, Lord Street, Liverpool." Outer rotating altimetric scale with a range from 0–8,000ft, the barometric scale calibrated in inches of mercury from 23–31. The good quality lacquered brass movement driven by a single 1¼” capsule, early style primary lever tensioned on a C-spring. Drum form case with detachable, threaded, full diameter Singer’s patent compass having floating mother of pearl card divided into cardinals and intercardinals, lyre trademark and “Singer’s Patent”. Compass locking catch to side. The whole pocket barometer compendium contained within its original oxblood moroccan leather over wood, pale blue silk and velvet lined double case having snap closure on a twin button release. Chadburn & Son, known for quality, manufactured a range of pocket barometers and altimeters. Examples of compendia by this maker are scarce - this one is a wonderful example of their work in fine original working order and condition. The barometric altimeter is sensitive with good progression, the compass swings freely finding north easily. The lacquered brass case retaining virtually all its original finish, the dial clean original condition. The compass card with some losses to applied painted detail. The leather over wood case essentially sound with some losses, abrasions and signs of repair, release buttons replaced, the fabric interior remaining sound and intact though with some fading. A fine collector's piece.
