Description
The watch has a nice quality 11 jewel stem-winding movement, grade 590 which was produced in relatively low numbers, which is working well. The movement is signed and it has the serial number 601558 which dates it back to 1902. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover. The Inside of the inner cover has some surface scratching.
The watch measures 50.6mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is 10ct gold filled and is the Moon model made by the Dennison Watch Case Company. The case is in nice condition with only light marking from general use. The front cover has a small central lens surrounded by enamel filled Roman numerals. The case is also stamped American Waltham Watch Company although there is no evidence that the movement has been changed (perhaps a mix up in the factory when the watch was assembled as Dennison also made cases for Waltham).
The winding crown pushes in to open the front cover.
Inside, the glass lens is in nice condition.
The dial has a couple of very faint hairline cracks between 3 &4 but otherwise it is in nice condition with blued steel hands, including the special half hunter hour hand so that the time can be read when the front cover is closed.
The Rockford Watch Company began manufacture in 1873 with equipment purchased from the Cornwell Watch Company, and their first watch was made available in 1876. Their factory was built in Rockford. Rockford watches were quite popular with railroad men and the company aimed a high percentage of their advertising towards them. The company had financial problems in 1896, and after reorganisation the name was changed to Rockford Watch Co Ltd. They finally closed their doors in 1915. Rockford produced a relatively small number of good quality watches, and as such they are quite collectable.
The watch will be sent in a new presentation box.
