English Sterling silver (fully hallmarked) Antique large horseshoe fob (by The Capewell Horse Nail Co. Ltd) for an equestrian Gentleman's pocket watch chain. C~ Hallmarked 1924. Rare find. Measures; 3.3cm height (including the top ring), 2.8cm wide and weighs a heavy 12.4 grams. Large and highly detailed horseshoe fob made for The Capewell Horse Nail Company Ltd - Est 1881 in Hartford, Connecticut, U.S.A by an Englishman George Capewell who invented and patented an automated machine to mass produce horse nails, predominately for the U.S Army Calvary. The back is smooth, highly polished and is stamped; PRESENTED BY THE CAPEWELL HORSE NAIL Co. LTD TO (has never been engraved with a name or dedication). Clearly hallmarked (within different shaped, recessed cartouches) with the Lion passant (Sterling silver), Anchor (Birmingham assay) and capital fancy letter; Z - dating to 1924. Also stamped with the makers initials (again within a fancy, recessed cartouche); F&S - Fattorini & Sons. Original robust Sterling silver top ring (again carries the Lion passant) to attach to a Gentleman's pocket watch chain. Excellent clean and bright condition with just a few fine little (micro) surface scratches commensurate with age. Looks to have never been worn or displayed.
