Description
A high-quality solid silver cased English fusee pocket watch by the “Coventry Cooperative Watch Manufacturing Society Ltd”, (Ccwms), with its registered Hq at Stanley Terrace, Earlsdon, Coventry. The Cooperative employed their own watchmakers, and related craftsmen and women and had its own registered trademark, (which can be seen engraved into this watches balance clock on the movement). (Nb: During the period c1840 - 1900, the buoyant city of Coventry watchmaking community was widely regarded as not only the best in Britain, but quite probably, the best in the world). The Society was established c1883, by a consortium of well-established Coventry watchmakers who pooled their expertise, skills, and resources together, to produce suburb quality watches far more quickly and efficiently than they could do on their own. This, in order to help counteract the increasing numbers of mass-produced pocket watches being imported into the UK from Switzerland and American. The strategy behind the Cooperative did work successfully for about 15 years, eventually however, the cost of producing UK pocket watches just could not compete with the cost of overseas imports during the world recession of the early 1900’s and hence the decline of Ccwms as a watch making entity was inevitable. As such and in 1905, the Cooperative started to diversify into making parts for electrical apparatus and bicycle manufacture, plus parts for the motor car and aviation industries, (which as some may know, was to become the major part of Coventry city’s manufacturing base in the next 80+ years). As such, Ccwms made pocket watches are scarce and very collectible today, this watch being one of their earliest made timepieces! This very fine Victorian watch, was hallmarked in London 1884, and has a white enamelled dial with all gold hands, and subsidiary second’s dial. The fusee movement has a compensated balance with ruby end stone, and the case maker was Joseph Walton (“Jw”), the case and movement serial numbers being the same, “51782.” The watch comes in an executive Pu leather storage / display case with a winding key, together with instructions on how to wind and set the watch time. Note: This watch does not come with a chain or fob. If you require a silver chain/fob from our large stock, please contact us for advice.
