Description
Antique Swiss (Schwob Freres) Wallingford Watch Company, high grade 15 jewel Gentleman's pocket watch with beautiful ivory porcelain dial in a highly ornate 10 carat (tested) rose gold filled (has a lovely pink 'blush' and is known in the U.K as rolled gold) original 'Diana' full hunter case.
C ~1900's.
Full working order, very good time keeper and has been fully checked and serviced by my highly experienced watchmaker, guaranteed to be 100% authentic - a timepiece to grace any collection.
DIAL;-
Impressive and distinctive, high gloss, ivory porcelain dial in mint condition - absolutely no hairlines, marks or nibbles.
Heavily scrolled black Arabic numbers (note the lovely little arrow tip to number 4) with black minute markers, bolder 5 minute markers and black Arabic numbers (5 - 60) forming the outer chapter ring.
Recessed sub dial with black Arabic numbers and black seconds chapters.
Fabulous finely cut, original rose gold steel Louis X1V hands and original rose gold arrow tip seconds hand all in lovely straight, unmarked order.
Clearly signed in very fancy black script; Wallingford Watch Co.
Original hunter glass (not acrylic) in amazing clear, bright condition with no scratches or marks and just two very tiny air bubbles showing under eyeglass only which were caused by the manufacturing process.
CASE;-
The highly ornate and extremely impressive (5.1cm diameter / 7.4cm from top of bow to base and 1.5cm depth) 10 carat (tested) rose gold filled original 'Diana' full hunter case is heavy (has a pleasing solid feel in the hand and total watch weight is a hefty 118.1 grams), robust and in lovely condition with just a tiny bit of light overall wear and little surface scratches commensurate with age.
All covers (both inside and out) still retain their original, high gloss, mirror finish.
The front and back covers are beautifully decorated with slightly raised five pointed stars set upon a heavily scrolled, engine turned background.
Carries an un-engraved large shield shaped cartouche to the front cover with the back having the traditional bullseye centre.
Front cover opens correctly to a fraction over 90 degrees when the crown is depressed and the back and dust covers open to exactly 90 degrees, all closing tightly with the three large hinges being true and firm with absolutely no play.
The inside of the dust cover (which has one light scratch - looks like someone once tested it to see if solid gold) carries a wonderful engine turned 'rising sun' design, stamped to centre with the case makers Trade name; DIANA and carries a wonderful image of the Roman Goddess Diana above.
Numbered; 266634 and is again numbered to the back case curvette; 6641.
MOVEMENT;-
The stem wound and lever set Swiss Schwob Freres high grade 15 ruby jewelled, 3/4 fire gilt plate plate lever movement is in superb bright and clean order and as mentioned above has just been fully checked and serviced.
Carries the most wonderful frosted engine turning to the top and bottom plates - the detail of which remains as crisp and clear today as the day they were made.
Has a bi-arm / bi-metal balance wheel with rose gold balance screws and two red gold meantime screws (for precision timing), bright blued steel balance spring (which is true, in the round and 'breathing' well), large ruby jewels in sunken chaton settings, ruby end stone, ruby pallet jewels and highly polished steel case screws.
Clearly stamped on the top plates in fancy arched script with the makers name; SCHWOB FRERES CHAUX-DE-FONDS (they were founded in 1862 Switzerland).
Numbered to the bottom plate (side of the balance assembly); 52540.
Balance action is absolutely tremendous in all positions with a sure, strong positive action - runs like a train.
Winds extremely smoothly and fully (do not be afraid to fully wind, over-winding is the greatest horological myth!)
Lever hand set (located to the side of the bezel between 4 - 5) operates smoothly and correctly.
Original large gold filled 'onion' crown.
Good original gold filled bow.
APPRAISAL;-
A Gentleman's very handsome and highly unusual Swiss timepiece - she will make a perfect gift and a heirloom to be enjoyed by your future generations!
Ready to wear or display.
Will be delivered in a new presentation box as shown and be very securely and safely packed.
