Pocket Watch Smiths 1971 Vintage Silver Chrome Case Black Dial Opera Watch Fwo

Gentleman's Vintage Smiths pocket watch (Opera watch) with fabulous jet black dial in a chunky and highly ornate silver chrome case. C~1971. Looks to have been much loved and very well taken care of - her condition certainly reflects this. Full working order (with the regulator correctly sat in the central position), has recently been checked/serviced by my highly experienced watchmaker and is guaranteed to be 100% authentic - a timepiece to grace any collection! Dial;- Impressive and distinctive, jet black gloss dial in mint condition - no scratches, marks or fading. Clearly signed in white fancy script; SMITHS with; MADE IN GT BRITAIN in arched white script to base of dial. Bold white Roman numerals and original finely cut white steel dauphine hands both in lovely straight, un-marked order. (Point to note - the Smiths 'Opera' watches do not have a sub dial). Original domed crystal in clear and bright condition with few overall micro surface scratches showing under eyeglass only. Case;- The highly polished, chunky silver chrome case (5cm diameter / 5.4cm from top of bow to base, 1.4cm depth) is heavy (has a pleasing solid feel in the hand and total watch weight is a very respectable 60.7 grams), robust and in wonderful condition - absolutely no wear or indentations and just a few overall light and fine little surface scratches commensurate with age. All covers (both inside and out) still retain their original, high gloss, mirror finish (please excuse the reflections/dark shadows in the pictures - was extremely difficult to photograph). The front bezel and back cover carry a crisp, bright totally un-worn engine turned decoration which reflects the light beautifully and has the traditional (un-engraved) circular cartouche to back. Both covers snap on and off correctly, closing tightly with a very reassuring click. Movement;- The stem wound and set pin pallet movement is in clean and bright order and as mentioned above has just been checked/serviced by my highly experienced watch maker. Stamped clearly on the top plates in arched script; MADE IN BRITAIN and is numbered; 71 (1971). Balance action is tremendous in all positions (could not be any better) with a sure, strong positive action - runs like a train with the loud Smiths tick. Winds extremely smoothly and fully (do not be afraid to fully wind, over-winding is the greatest horological myth!) Hand set operates smoothly and correctly - the push down action is very firm and true. Lovely original crisp un-worn big flat topped 'onion' crown. Original large horse shoe shaped bow. Appraisal;- A very handsome and highly impressive Gentleman's British timepiece - she will make a perfect gift and a heirloom to be enjoyed by your future generations! Ready to wear or display.
